Energy storage (seen from the side of wind energy)

The intermittency of renewables is the last, remaining obstacle to full-scale integration of wind power. If cost-effective electricity storage could be established at system level or wind farm level this would facilitate the use of wind power for both base load and balancing power.

Initially Megavind will focus on storage at wind farm level, since storage at system level will generally be the field of large utilities and system operators.

Working topics:

  • Focus on how the wind farm can create more value, when exploring the options for energy storage, like e.g. chemical, electrical or thermal storage

Form: Megavind will develop a strategy report that discusses the merits of storage seen from a wind energy perspective. How can large scale (electricity) storage units increase the value of wind energy from an electricity market perspective (society) and from a wind farm perspective (owner)? Different storage solutions will be examined, and research priorities listed for each.

Target group: Wind farm operators, policy makers, system operators, energy storage technology developers
